Position:         Early Head Start Teacher 

Department:  Head Start 

Reports To:    Head Start Center Director

Status:            Non Exempt
 

Position Summary:    Assist in the implementation of Curriculum/Adopted Program when planning and setting up classroom environment for children 0 to 3. Assist in the performance of screenings and assessments on all children according to a particular time frame and track individual child goals. Interact on a daily basis with parents and solicit volunteers for participation in the program as needed.

Essential Function / Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure safety in performing all job responsibilities and adhere to safety policy.
  • Maintain clean/safe work area, classroom, gross motor and playground areas.
  • Attend staff meeting and monthly Parent Meetings.
  • Conduct home visits/parent conferences for the families in the classroom with Co-Teacher.
  • Assist with daily activities.
  • Assist with planning for the use and training of volunteers for the classroom, playground and field trips as needed.
  • Ability to visually assess the health and behaviors of children.
  • Assist Co Teacher in encouraging parents to give input into daily curriculum and document on lesson plans and to complete physical, dental and health screenings and follow-up in a timely manner.
  • Implement child’s Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP) and Individual Leaning Plan into classroom activities as planned with Co Teacher.
  • Individualize activities to meet the needs of each child as planned with Co Teacher.
  • Assist Co Teacher with scheduling and organizing time and materials to allow for educational home visits and parent/teacher conferences.
  • Integrate activities from all content areas into the classroom as planned with Co Teacher.
  • Complete children’s observations; keep necessary computerized reports/documentation weekly or as planned with Co Teacher or Center Director.
  • Provide customer service in reception, greet and direct visitors at the site as needed.
  • Review lesson plans submitted with Co Teacher for review by Center Director and Education Coordinator weekly.
  • Follow step-by-step activities as outlined in content area plans and policies and procedures.
  • Participate in professional development, sometimes off-site, at the request of Center Director.
  • Must be responsible and able to handle confidential material.
  • Communicate with parents about daily extended enrichment.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Skills and Abilities Required:
  • High school diploma or GED and current Child Development Associate Certification (CDA) are required for this position.
  • One year of related experience.
  • Maintain current, valid Texas driver’s license and liability insurance
  • Able to obtain and keep current Adult and Pediatric CPR and First Aid certifications
  • Good verbal and written skills
  • Computer literacy, (Word processing, database and spreadsheets, Internet and e-mail)
  • Preferred- Bachelor's degree in Childhood Development/Early Childhood Education or related field of study.
  • Preferred – Bilingual

Physical Skills and Abilities Required:
  • Lifting in excess of 25 lbs
  • Able to kneel, stoop, bend, push, pull and sit on the floor to attend to children’s needs
  • Ability to assess the health and behaviors of children by sight and sound
