Position Summary:
The Head Start Assistant Teacher is responsible for assisting in the classroom environment by providing support and supervision for children enrolled in the Head Start program. The position reports to the Center Director and operates under moderate supervision with limited latitude for the use of independent judgment, discretion and initiative.
Essential Job Duties:
- Ensure safety in performing all job responsibilities; adhere to all safety policies in alignment with Head Start/Day Care licensing standards.
- Assist with daily educational activities communicating with parents about student enrichment and experiences.
- Assist Head Start Teacher with scheduling and organizing time and materials to allow for educational home visits and parent/teacher conferences.
- Assist with coordinating volunteer activities for the classroom ensuring appropriate background checks have been completed.
- Assist with the assessment of children’s health and development.
- Gather information and assist with completing all the required documentation (lesson plans, observations forms, etc.).
- Maintain Student behavior and properly document all incidents/accidents in a timely manner
- Complete daily health check & assist children while brushing teeth
- Assist with Face to Name attendance
- Encourage parents to complete physical, dental and health screenings and follow-up in a timely manner.
- Assist in planning and providing an individualized curriculum for children including IEP/ISFP goals.
- Review lesson plans in advance to provide administrative support.
- Provide customer service in reception, greet and direct visitors at the site as needed.
- Participate in meetings, at the request of Center Director.
- Maintain and protect confidential information pertaining to staff, students and families.
- Act as the Teacher’s designee when required.
- Maintain custodial duties in classroom, Head Start Center and playground area.
- Comply with point of service, family style meals

- Must be able to cooperate and work effectively with others
- Must be diplomatic, honest and fair
- Regular and Punctual attendance is an essential function of the position
- Perform other duties as assigned or as they become apparent
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to operate various word-processing software, spreadsheets, and database programs.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Training:
- CDA
Experience:
- One (1) year of related experience.
Licenses/Certifications:
- Valid Texas driver’s license.
- Obtain and keep current Adult and Pediatric CPR and First Aid certifications
- Current Child Development Certificate
